Gypsy & Oliver

Gypsy arrived at the shelter in August of 2016. She was brought to the shelter overnight by the police as a stray, and we could immediately see she had just very recently had puppies. She was even still producing milk! As luck would have it, just days earlier we received a litter of Border Collie puppies that were under a week old. The puppies had to be taken home and bottle fed formula milk that needed to be mixed fresh every 2-3 hours, it's very time consuming work! After a few days of this we had the idea "What if Gypsy would be willing to nurse these puppies?" We put the puppies in with her, and she immediately went to work!

Gypsy continued to raise these puppies as her own for the next 6 weeks until they were old enough to be weened, and was moved to the adoption floor. If you still don't believe in fate, listen to the next part of the story!

Just a few months before, a new employee Kaylee had been hired. And she happens to LOVE Border Collies, and was planning on adding a new fur baby to her family soon. That's how Oliver found his new home! He still occasionally visits the shelter when his mom comes to work, and plays with his friend Max! (Another one of our "Success Story" animals).

Don't worry, it doesn't end there! Gypsy remained at the shelter until February of 2017, until one day a couple decided to visit looking for a new dog, as their dog had ran away a few months ago and they couldn't find her. We took them back to look at the dogs, and when they walked by Gypsy they were shocked! "Jersey? That's our dog! That's Jersey!" She was ecstatic when she saw them! Gypsy (or should I say Jersey?) returned home, back where she belongs! Almost like she was sent just to take care of these puppies that didn't have a mom!

In October of 2021, Jersey crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Her memory will live on in our hearts forever!
