Hank

Hank arrived at the shelter in early June of 2016. Well, maybe I should say he arrived in Hibbing, not quite at the shelter just yet! Here's what I mean...

Hank was brought in as a transfer from a reservation, the morning he arrived he was able to slip out of his leash and run away out into the field. We had to catch him as soon as possible, being our building is right off of the highway! We left food out in our outdoor play yard and left the gate open, hoping we could trap him inside. Every morning when we arrived he would be inside the play yard, but would escape before we were able to close the gate! We could tell Hank almost wanted to be caught, but his wild-dog instinct would cause him to run.

This went on for about a week until one employee, Jared, just happened to decide to visit the shelter on his day off. He saw Hank was sniffing around the fence of the play yard, so he opened the gate and silently hid and waited. Once Hank walked a good distance into the play yard, he ran up and shut the gate behind him. Now there was just the matter of getting him inside the building. Jared crawled on his hands and knees, and eventually, prone on his stomach just to make Hank know he wasn't threatened. After an hour of this, he was finally able to get close enough to Hank to pet him, and eventually slip 2 leashes around him. (Let's not make the same mistake twice!)

Hank was grateful to finally be in a safe and warm place, even if he WAS stuck in a kennel! He had scabs all over his body from tick bites, and the tips of his ears were eaten raw by flies. Hank was a very loving and gentle dog, and it didn't take him more than a couple weeks to get adopted. He went to the perfect home! His owners keep him as an outdoor dog and he has free roam of a huge yard. A happy ending for everyone!
