Kanook

Kanook arrived at the shelter in November of 2015. We received a call from a woman that said she at first thought she saw a wolf in her yard, but then saw he had a very old and dirty collar on. Leslie, the shelter manager, drove out to his location and was eventually able to coax him into the van. When Kanook arrived, he was immediately placed into isolation. His entire body was absolutely covered in mange (a horrible, skin-eating disease). It was by far the worst case any of us had ever seen. Blood was oozing from all over his body, and his face was so mangled the only way you could tell he was a husky were his bright blue eyes piercing through the scabs.

Kanook remained isolated for over 10 weeks. He was given 4 different types of medication just to treat all of his medial problems. He had been through plenty of terrible experiences already in his life, and he was only about 1 year old! Around mid-January, after his mange had cleared up, he was finally able to move to the adoption floor. At the time he was literally the only dog in the entire shelter! There were a few other dogs that came and went in the next few weeks, but many people would overlook Kanook because they didn't look at his fun and positive personality, which is what kept him going the past few  months, but instead just looked at the outside. They saw a scab-covered, hairless dog and thought "Who would want a gross looking dog like that?"

Finally, on February 7th, 2016, Kanook's true miracle came along. He was adopted by a family who didn't care what he looked like, but instead loved him for who he was, and he never looked back! An animal going home is always happy, but this is one that was hard to let go, and we all still think of Kanook all the time. He will always have a place in our hearts!
